Definition
This section provides a word, phrase, character, or group of characters, normally appearing in a resource, that names it or the work contained in it. This information may also be assigned when a given title has not been provided.

titleInfo is a parent element which has the following components:
  • Attributes:
    • type
    • authority
    • xlink
    • ID
  • Subelements:
    • title
    • subTitle
    • partNumber
    • partName
    • nonSort
Usage Note
Capitalize any initial articles (a, an, the, or foreign language equivalents); capitalize first significant word and any proper names (personal, organizations, corporate).

Title Information - Type
Definition
Identifies the type of title being provided.
Controlled Vocabulary
main; uniform; abbreviated; alternative; translated.

"main": a word, phrase, character, or group of characters, normally appearing in a chief title of resource, that names it or the work contained in it.

"uniform": identifies an item if it has appeared under varying titles.

"abbreviated": used for a shorten title.

"alternative": an alternative form of the title when it differs substantially from the title and is considered important in providing further identification of the resource.

"translated": used for titles translated from one language to another.

Definition
The name of the authoritative list for a controlled value is recorded here. An authority attribute may be used to indicate that a title is controlled by a record in an authority file (e.g. authority="naf"). Title Information - Title
Definition
A word, phrase, character, or group of characters that constitutes the chief title of a resource (i.e. the title normally used when citing the resource).
Usage Note
Transcribe title exactly as it appears on item, even if there are spelling or grammatical errors. A title may be provided in cases where a title is not evident on the item. In such cases, the source of title is provided in a note. Titles may be provided in supplied dates when this information is considered to be relevant.

Definition
A word, phrase, character, or group of characters that contains the remainder of the title information after the title proper.
Usage Note
Provide when it is necessary to include this information as separate from title. This information follows the main title and is preceded by a colon.
