DescriptionThe investigation regarding the South Amboy powder pier explosion included a dispute regarding the City of South Amboy’s laws regarding explosives, dynamite, and munitions. Dated to June 6, 1950, this notarized affidavit, from John P. McGuire, City Solicitor, South Amboy, N.J. to the United States of America and the United States Coast Guard is titled “In the matter of the destruction of the Steam Lighter KENNETH HEALING and others at South Amboy, N.J. on May 19, 1950.” McGuire refutes the mayor’s statement in the investigation “that a resolution was passed by the South Amboy city council, as recently as two months ago, condemning the presence of large amounts of explosives within the city limits.” The document attests to and includes a copy of the city’s only related ordinance from March 13, 1917 titled “An Ordinance To Regulate The Manufacture And Storing Of Dynamite, Gun Powder, Munitions and Explosives Within The Corporate Limits Of The City Of South Amboy.”
