Abstract
Memorial sermon for Rev. Van Cleef, who served as pastor of First Reformed Dutch Church of Van Vorst, renamed Wayne Street Reformed Church, from 1850 through 1903. Biography covers his education at New Brunswick Theological Seminary, service at Coxsackie, and life in Jersey City. Historical setting describes communities of Harsimus and Van Vorst Townships, which would be merged into Jersey City during Van Cleef's pastorate. Review of growth of church and relations with community. Includes tribute by Rev. Cornelius Brett.
