Abstract
This image of the United Church Service was taken at Zion Lutheran Church on July 10, 1955. The theme of the service was "Freedom of Religion."
Part of the Egg Harbor City Centennial celebration, the United Church Service was planned to take place at the Municipal Athletic Field. As noted in The News of Egg Harbor City, rain forced the service indoors, but "did not dampen the spirit which prevailed." The News also reported that more than one thousand people attended the service.
A conflicting and likely mistaken news report in the July 11, 1955 edition of The Evening Bulletin of Philadelphia reported that two thousand people participated in the "Freedom of Religion" service, which they claimed had been held at the Municipal Athletic Field. The Evening Bulletin made no mention of rain.
All Egg Harbor City clergymen participated in this service, including the following: Reverend Charles E. String, of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church; Reverend Elmer Bender, of the Moravian Church; Reverend Clarence B. Roberts, of the Emmanuel Congregational Church; Rabbi Seymour Rosen, of Temple Emeth Shalom, of Margate; Reverend Clifford Mays; Reverend Louis Ewald, of Zion's Lutheran Church; Reverend Norman Boyd, of the Church of the Nazarene; and Reverend Frank Camillo, of First Baptist Church.
