The Grammar School was chartered in 1766 as the Queen's College Grammar School. In 1825, Queen's College was renamed Rutgers College, and in 1883, the Grammar School was renamed the Rutgers Preparatory School. The Rutgers Preparatory School remained in New Brunswick until 1957, when it moved to its current location in Somerset, N.J. Renamed Alexander Johnston Hall in 1964, the building today houses Rutgers University administrative offices.
