Abstract
Ichizo Hattori graduated from Rutgers as a member of the class of 1875 with a degree in the sciences. During his time at Rutgers, he was an active member of Beta Theta Pi and the Epsilon Chi fraternity, and graduated with honors. He eventually became vice president and general manager of the University of Tokyo and later a Superior of the Department of Education in Japan. From 1884 to 1885, he was governor of Nagasaki Ken and Hiago Ken, as well as a member of the House of Peers and Japanese Commissioner to the International Congress at Brussels. In 1918, he received the official degree of Junii, and was conferred with the first decoration of the Rising Sun by the emperor of Japan.
