Abstract (type = abstract)
In this "I remember" memoir, Robert Yutaka Hasuike recalls the dormitories that Japanese, Estonian, Latvian, and Hungarian workers lived in at Seabrook Farms. In the dorms, each family had their own apartment, and there were separate apartments for single women and single men. Each dormitory had a lobby that was a commons area for everyone. Robert remembers many parties held in these lobbies. He also remembers playing with many different children from war-ravaged European countries. Although everyone spoke different languages, children were still able to communicate well with each other. They would teach each other words from their natives languages. Robert, like many Japanese children his age at Seabrook, considered English his native language. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms.
