Abstract
In this "I remember" collection of sports memoirs, Minoru Hirata, James Okino, and Henry Wakai recall intramural sports, varsity sports, and notable Seabrook athletes from 1944 to 1989. The recollections first begin with a brief history of the Seabrook Community House, run by Dorothy Chapman. The House, a former USO Center during the World Wars, was the center of social life at Seabrook, as well as "served as the nucleaus of sports teams." There were intramural basketball and softball activities, little league baseball, a traveling adult baseball team, and bowling teams. Additionally, many Seabrook teens attended Bridgeton High School, where they excelled in varsity sports. One notable individual was Richard Kimishima, who organized sports activities at the Gila River internment camp before arriving at Seabrook. He also was a classmate of President Richard Nixon, and was able to arrange for Nixon to visit Seabrook during his presidential campaign tour. The Seabrook Educational and Cultural Center has been soliciting current and past residents of Seabrook Farms for an "I remember" project. Residents are asked to create narratives regarding their experiences at Seabrook Farms. These memories help preserve the history and multi-cultural heritage of Seabrook Farms.
