Abstract (type = summary)
The carte de visite was a type of small photograph mounted on a thick paper card, usually the size of a calling card, making it easily tradeable among friends and visitors. It was popular through the 1860's, after which it was supplanted by the larger cabinet card.

Alexander Moore Way (11/15/1826~1/12/1891) enlisted as Captain of Co. G 1st NJV on May 28, 1861. He transferred to Co. S on July 21st, 1863, and was promoted to Major of that company upon the resignation of Major Enos Fouratt. He was then brevetted as Lieutenant Col. and Col. on March 13, 1865.

His history as a soldier was a distinguished one, his career after the war less so. In 1887, he pled guilty for embezzlement of $38,000 from the Empire and Union Building Loan and from private persons, and he was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment in 1888; however, officers of the Masonic Grand Lodge signed a petition for his release, and he was pardoned in 1889.

He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
