Abstract (type = summary)
The students work on the task: If the orange rod is called fifty, what number name would I give the white rod? Sarah and Beth offer an answer immediately, and are questioned by researcher Amy Martino about the process they used to arrive at their solution. David and Meredith use division to solve the problem, and Laura and Jessica explain that they used trial and error to find the correct number name. Brian suggested an alternative number name and attempted to justify his solution. Then, the class discussed the solution, and several students offered justifications.
