NoteUnder an act of the colonial government appointing Commissioners "to buy out and divide the common lands of Bergen", the several in the different patents numbering up to one hundred and sixty eight which had at that time been granted within the limits of the present Township of Bergen and of Jersey City were in 1764, separately surveyed and located, and all the territory not thus embraced and which had previously been held in common among the patentees, was then divided among them in proportion to the extent of their grants. The different tracts comprising those patents are represented on the map by the numbers which designate them on the field book of the Commissioners, thence referring to the name of the grantee and which is recorded in the Clerks Office of the County of Bergen.
