DescriptionA general overview of ecological assessment, with an emphasis on risk assessment from a toxicological perspective, is provided including background on theory and related concepts. Ecological assessment is considered as linked with ecosystem management. Current ecological assessment and ecomanagement systems in the United States are identified at both the federal and state levels. The intent of this research has been: to examine various approaches for assessing ecological effects; to bring New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) programs up-to-date in this rapidly developing field; to foster links between programs; to identify outstanding issues with some suggested resolutions; and to outline a framework for addressing these issues in New Jersey.
