Abstract
(type = summary)
In the final ninth clip in the series from the first of seven interviews focusing on Early Algebraic Ideas about the binomial expansion, Stephanie is presented with a drawing of a square with sides labeled x+y by an observing graduate student. In response to questions from researcher Carolyn Maher, Stephanie identifies and labels sections of the square and adds them together symbolically as another way of representing (x+y)(x+y).
The problem presented to Stephanie:
Given the square drawn on this paper with each side x+y, find the area.
