In the third clip in a series of six from the second of seven interviews in which 8th grade Stephanie explores Early Algebraic Ideas about Binomial Expansion, the researcher, Carolyn Maher asks Stephanie to draw and label a square with side length (a+b). Stephanie draws and labels the square, marking the lengths "a" and "b" on each side. She then explores ways of partitioning the drawing in order to determine its area geometrically.
The problems as posed to Stephanie:
What is the meaning of the square of the quantity (a+b)? What about a square with side "a"?
What about a square with each side 3 units in length? How could you represent these ideas geometrically?
