DescriptionIn the fourth clip in a series of six from the second of seven interviews in which 8th grade Stephanie explores Early Algebraic Ideas about Binomial Expansion, the researcher, Carolyn Maher asks Stephanie to determine the area of the square of the quantity (a+b). Stephanie identifies the area of each of the four pieces of the square that she has partitioned earlier, records the total area as the sum of the four parts and simplifies the expression.
The problems as posed to Stephanie:
What is the area of the square of the quantity (a+b)? How could you represent this area as the sum of the parts?
