Abstract (type = summary)
In the second of eleven clips from the first day of the Early Algebra Ideas 6th grade class sessions, the researcher, Robert B. Davis, models adding positive and negative integers to a class of 6th grade students by having the students add and remove small colored stones from a bag. For a given action, after a student gives the command: “Go”, a second student, responding to directions from the class, first adds a specific number of stones to the bag and then removes another specified amount. Davis and the students describe each action with a symbolic equation that designates addition as "adding more pebbles", subtraction as “taking away” with the symbol “-“ and attaches a superscript “–“ before the numeral to designate a negative integer. Stephanie, Milin, Amy-Lynn, Jeff, Michelle I. and Brian volunteer to model and record during the activity, responding to directions from Davis and the class. Researchers Carolyn Maher, Alice Alston, Amy Martino and Tom Purdy, along with Marcia O’Brien, district supervisor, and Michael Poe, teacher, are observing.
Equations constructed to represent the “pebble action” examples:
7-12= "superscript -"5
1 – 6 = "superscript -"5
Final statement posed to the class: 6 – 8 = ____ .
