Word problems with addition and subtraction, Stephanie's group, Clip 1 of 9: Problem 1, how many more legos does David have than John?
Abstract
(type = summary)
In the first of nine clips in a first grade classroom, Teacher Angela Marinaro introduces the day's activity and distributes a packet of problems to each child. She asks the students to identify the physical materials that are on each desk. The children respond that there are unifix cubes and colored stones. Stephanie volunteers to read the first problem to her group which includes Stephanie, Sean, Gerardo and Aaron. The four children begin to model the problem with stones or unifix cubes. Researcher Alice Alston asks the children to explain their reasoning and to compare their ideas with each other. Although there is some disagreement among the children as to whether the answer is 8 or 9, the students, all now using unifix cubes to model the problem, record the answer as 9 and move on to Problem 2.
The statement of problem 1:
David has 14 lego blocks. Paul has 5 lego blocks. How many more lego blocks does David have than Paul?
