In the fifth of nine clips in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, revisit their solutions to the first four problems of a set of six word problems involving addition and subtraction. Refer to the first four clips of the series for their initial work. Stephanie reads each problem in turn and the children, primarily Gerardo and Stephanie, reconstruct their physical models to check their earlier answers. In several cases, they express uncertainty and change their answers. Researcher Alice Alston asks them to explain or show how they found their answers, and to agree about the specific numerical answer for each problem.
Statement of Problem 1:
David has 14 lego blocks. Paul has 5 lego blocks. How many more lego blocks does David have than Paul?
Statement of Problem 2:
There are 11 men in the room. There are 6 women in the room. How many fewer women are in the room?
Statement of Problem 3:
Jim has 3 tennis balls. Jim has 1 fewer tennis ball than Don. How many tennis balls does Don have?
Statement of Problem 4:
Dad has 3 chickens. If Grandpa sells 3 chickens, he will have as many as Dad. How many chickens does Grandpa have?
