Title
Early algebra, investigating linear functions, series 7 of 7, Ariel's 8th grade interview, Clip 4 of 5: Ariel solving the Geese problem
Abstract
(type = summary)
In the fourth of five clips from a follow-up interview about his participation in Informal Mathematics Learning (IML), an after-school enrichment program, Ariel, an 8th grade student in an urban middle school, is asked by researcher Cecilia Arias to solve the Geese problem. Ariel completes a table for the values for Y when X is one through four and determines that the general equation is 2X+1. He notes that these values represent a linear equation, which he then represents as a graph.
The wording for the Geese problem as presented to Ariel:
Groups of birds sometimes fly in a V-pattern.
Below you see the three smallest V-patterns.
Each dot represents one bird in the pattern.

*
How many geese would be in the 4th V-pattern?
How could you represent the number of geese flying in a V-pattern of any number?
