In the second of eight clips in Series One of Exploring Linear Functions, six 7th grade students in an after-school enrichment program continue exploring the Guess My Rule activity as it is introduced by researcher Arthur Powell. Researcher Powell asks Yonny to propose the first two pairs of values for a rule and record them in a table with the independent variable represented as a "□" and the resulting dependent variable for each number, represented as a "∆". The students use various strategies to predict the result for two other values and then successfully articulate the rule as "times 10 plus 5". Christian proposes a second rule, which the students quickly guess after seeing the first pair as "times 2".
