Abstract

During this session, the students begin by working on the following problem: “Stephen has a white shirt, a blue shirt and a yellow shirt. He has a pair of blue jeans and a pair of white jeans. How many different outfits can he make?” Researcher Amy Martino introduces the problem by stressing that she is interested in how they solve the problem rather than in just the answer. Stephanie and Dana draw pictures to represent the shirts and pants, labeling them with the letters b, w, and y to represent the colors blue, white, and yellow, and then draw lines from each of the shirts to each of the pants. After they are both sure they cannot make any more combinations, they explain their solution to Amy and then write up their solution on a large paper.
