Abstract (type = abstract)
Drought. Fire. Flood is a literary novel following the main character, Keisha, a girl from dirt-poor Downtown Victorville, trying to come to terms with the choices her loved ones are forced to make. Her sister stays in an unhealthy relationship, because as a high school dropout she has no other options for stability. Her best friend has started selling drugs for his cousin, but he’s twenty-one with four kids and no options. And the people she’s attracted to come and go through her life like tumbleweeds. She channels her frustration into the unexpected avenue of juice-making. As the harsh life of the desert begins to mark the people she loves, her need for control grows until she’s making exotic blends: juices for happiness, juices to help the poor. But eventually the reality of trying to survive in a place with no resources catches up with her, and she’ll learn trying to keep the people she loves safe in the desert is as impossible as trying to grow fruit from the drought-stricken ground.
