Abstract (type = abstract)
How the Mighty tells the story of newly-ordained priest David Bennett as he struggles to heal divisions within his Connecticut cathedral parish during the Episcopal Church’s shift in doctrine regarding same-sex love. The intellectually-inclined David, a graduate of Yale Divinity School, navigates the church’s troubles—a dearth of funds, overburdened staff and a civil war threatening to tear the flower-arranging committee asunder—with compassion and acerbic wit. But the daily crises have drained his energy, and the growing sense of unease surrounds his impending marriage to youth worker Michelle. To make matters worse, Michelle’s father, resident parish magnate, is determined to antagonize David’s every decision. David’s doubts come to the fore with the arrival of Michelle’s estranged brother, the enigmatic Jon. Finding himself strangely drawn to the young airman, David must choose whether to act on his affections or let a life-changing opportunity pass. The next move David makes will have devastating consequences for not only Michelle and Jon, but also the church community. David’s self-interrogation excavates the multifarious intersections between faith and sexuality.
