Abstract
This quilt is dedicated to my beloved grandmother Isabella Josephine (Carey) Grunderway, nee Marsh (1910-2000). The gospel song “Oh Happy Day” was one of Nana’s favorites, and thus the name of this quilt. The rainbow colors in this quilt make me happy and remind me of the joy my grandmother spread to all those around her. The color yellow is intentionally absent as it represents the sun and daylight, and Nana sleeps now, forever. The butterflies on the back represent the beauty of her person and spirit still touching all those who knew her, every day. I selected an open geometric quilting pattern to remind me of freedom.

Detail
The Montclair Historical Society and the Nubian Heritage Quilters Guild were jointly awarded a Common Heritage grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a quilt exhibition and preservation project on June 11 and 12, 2016. The exhibit will ran through the end of July at the Montclair Historical Society’s Crane House and Historic YWCA, Montclair, NJ. The preservation component of this event allowed visitors to bring quilts form their own homes and get photographs taken of their work by a professional photographer.
