DescriptionThe manner in which we teach United States war literature acts to reproduce the material and ideological conditions under which perpetual war is allowed to continue unfettered. The interpretive framework set up by schools, “the pedagogical frame,” reinforces the relations between literature, State Ideology, and history. In doing so, the pedagogical frame reproduces the social relations and ideologies that encourage war. Nationwide curricula are examined for the influence of the pedagogical frame. Literary works discussed include: Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, In the Lake of the Woods and The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien.
