TY - JOUR TI - Between belief and knowing DO - https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/T341714J PY - 2017 AB - Between Belief and Knowing is a 30-something black woman’s exploration of the intersections of faith, family, and feminism in her own life and a meditation on black female sexuality within the culture of the southern black church. I attempt to answer the questions, “Can black women love God and sex?” and “When is a black woman’s body ever her own?” At the age of twenty-eight, I walked away from a relationship with the man I believe to have been the love of my life because of my commitment to a belief system I later finds many flaws in. The personal responsibility I feel, however, developed within a larger historical and socio-cultural context. By contextualizing my lived experience, this memoir shows how history and culture trickle down to affect black women in very personal and intimate ways. KW - Creative Writing LA - eng ER -
