Abstract (type = abstract)
The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if an educational session and a cognitive aid would improve the accuracy and interrater reliability of different groups of anesthesia providers in using the American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification System (ASA-PS). In this questionnaire-based pretest-posttest study, participants were asked to assign physical status scores to five realistic patient case scenarios before and after the study intervention. After establishing a baseline level of accuracy in the pre-test, the researchers conducted an educational session and distributed a cognitive aid in the form of a badge buddy containing objective examples for each ASA-PS class. All statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS version 25. The statistical analysis used in this study included a repeated measures ANOVA followed by pairwise comparisons between each group, a paired t-test to measure the overall effect of the study intervention, and a FleissÂ’ Kappa calculation to measure interrater reliability. The results indicated that with the help of the cognitive aid and the increased objectivity of this classification system, overall accuracy and interrater reliability significantly improved. These results affirmed that an updated physical status classification system is both needed and achievable with buy-in from the anesthesia community.
