TY - JOUR TI - Improving hepatitis C screening in minority baby boomers in the primary care setting DO - https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-brqd-q831 PY - 2020 AB - Introduction: In the US, over 3.2 million people are living with Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection with 75% of them born between 1945-1965 (baby boomers). The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has recommended a one-time HCV screening for baby boomers. However, few data exist on the implementation of this recommendation in primary care settings. Purpose: This study sought to determine whether provider educational intervention can improve HCV screening among minority baby boomers in the primary care setting. Method: A total of 56 charts of minority baby boomers were randomly reviewed before and after the intervention; the (CDC) and the USPSTF guidelines for HCV screening in baby boomers, prevalence rate and centers for Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement for HCV screening was presented in a power point for providers. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were used. Results: Participants ages ranged from 54-74 years old. The percentage of charts screened for HCV prior to the educational intervention was 0%. Out of these 28 charts reviewed after the intervention 17 were screened for antibody for HCV. There was an increase in HCV antibody screening among minority baby boomers after the educational intervention for providers (X2 = 23.73, p < 0.01). Screening increased by 60.7% among all minority baby boomers; Screening in African American males increased by 14.29%; 14.29% increase in African American females; 10.71% increase in Hispanic males and 21.43% increase in Hispanic Females respectively. Implications: Improve HCV screening among baby boomers in the primary care setting by increasing provider's knowledge on HCV screening guidelines. Increase HCV screening education in baby boomers to enable them to start HCV screening conversation with their providers KW - HCV screening KW - Family Nurse Practitioner LA - English ER -
