TY - JOUR TI - A faith-based educational program to increase hypertension knowledge amongst African Americans DO - https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-1bg0-5290 PY - 2020 AB - Purpose of Project: The intent of this DNP project is to determine if a faith-based education program would improve the knowledge related to understanding hypertension and its related diseases amongst African American adults. Methodology: Participants completed a hypertension questionnaire before the education session and then after. The sessions were implemented within small groups within a faith-based organization. The study took place over a two week time frame. 20 participants participated in the study. Results: Study results were collected and data analysis was done comparing pre-test scores and post-test scores. The results showed an increase in knowledge after the session as compared to the pre-implementation phase. Implications for Practice: The African American church is viewed as a place of refuge and trust. And it's because of this that faith-based organizations play such a significant role in improving the health of its members and it also is a place of support which can be helpful in providing for health maintenance behaviors.
