Abstract (type = abstract)
Purpose of Project
The objective of this project was to distribute an educational intervention (i.e., a stress relief app) to students in their first semester of completing clinical rotations at a University in Newark, New Jersey. The anticipation was that the educational intervention would allow students to decrease their stress levels throughout their first semester in their clinical rotation, and it would eventually lead to change in their stress-relieving behaviors.
Methodology
The design of this project consisted of a pre- and post-test design to measure stress in nursing students before and after implementing the stress relief app. The pretest was administered before implementation of the stress relief app and the posttest was administered after the students had used the app. A student evaluation questionnaire was also distributed to the students.
Results
The mean stress score was 34.2 prior to the intervention and fell to 28.1 in the post-intervention assessment. Results of the Wilcoxon test indicated a statistically significant decrease in the stress levels before and after the implementation of the Breethe stress relief app (Z = -2.345, p = .019).
Implications for Practice
There are many implications this DNP project can have on clinical practice, as well as educational practice. This project can be expanded on in a variety of different professions and student majors. It can be tested using a larger study group, one that does not only focus on nursing students in the DNP track.
