DescriptionPurpose of Project: The overall aim of this project was to increase the knowledge of healthcare providers about HIV, decrease stigmatization, and improve the quality of care for PWH. This project used an anonymous survey to evaluate healthcare provider stigma and measured the effectiveness of an educational intervention to decrease HIV stigmatization.

Methodology: This project used a pre and post-test interventional design. An anonymous survey was administered to participants, which evaluated attitudes and stigmatizing behaviors towards PWH. Then, an educational program based on the results of the survey was administered to participants. Participants’ knowledge of HIV was evaluated using pre- and post-intervention tests. One-month following the intervention, the anonymous survey was re-administered to participants. Outcomes measured included HIV knowledge, attitudes towards PLWH, and stigmatizing behaviors.

Results: The results of the anonymous survey identified self-reported incidents of clinical discrimination, observations of stigmatization, and fear of infection on the part of providers. Participants reported wearing double gloves when caring for PWH. Other participants reported they had witnessed providers rendering poorer treatment to PWH as well as talking badly about PWH. The educational session pre-test identified some misconceptions about HIV transmission and testing. The mean pre-intervention test score was 86% and after the educational intervention, the mean test score was 100%. A post-educational survey was completed to evaluate providers assessment of the educational session, 100% of participants reported that they felt their practice would change based on the educational session. The educational session sparked an interest in HIV care, indicated by continued inquiries about HIV and PWH, and several providers were also eager to become involved in helping the community.

Implications for Practice: The results of this project demonstrate the need to continue to pursue effective strategies to decrease stigmatization of PWH by healthcare providers. This project serves as a foundation for further programs to decrease stigma and clinical discrimination towards PWH and other marginalized groups in healthcare facilities.
