Abstract (type = abstract)
Purpose of Project: The purpose of this project was to explore the role of the Latina housekeeper in the breastfeeding experience of Latina women in the immediate postpartum period in an effort to increase exclusivity of breastfeeding in the hospital setting.
Methodology: Participants were Spanish speaking Latina housekeeping staff working on a maternity unit at a community hospital. The sampling was purposive. The project was guided by the Knowledge to Action theoretical framework. The project included a pre- and post-attitude assessment, a pre- and post-educational assessment and an educational training for housekeeping staff based on the BFHI.
Results: Before the intervention there were inconsistencies in thoughts and ideas regarding harms of formula feeding and benefits of breastmilk. Participants’ knowledge and positive attitudes toward breastfeeding increased after the educational intervention.
Implications for Practice: Recognition of the influence of non-clinical staff on patient decision-making offers a unique opportunity to improve breastfeeding outcomes. There is value in pursuing further research regarding the role of educating non-clinical staff to mitigate the ubiquitous use of formula in the immediate postpartum period. Informing the Latina housekeeping staff about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding may have an effect on the culture within the hospital and overall breastfeeding outcomes for Latina women
