Purpose of Project
To develop a pilot program for simulation or scenario-based training for the nurses of an inpatient unit when confronted with violent patients or visitors.
Methodology
This pilot project used retrospective chart review to design composite scenarios that model real-life experiences. A small sample of nurses was asked to evaluate the training content and provide feedback to the study team.
Results
The training curriculum offers resources and evidenced based interventions for violence prevention, de-escalation techniques, and personal safety measures.
Implications for Practice
Preparing nurses with the necessary skills and abilities to protect themselves in violent situations while maintaining the ability to offer therapeutic interventions will improve the culture of safety at the project site.
