TY - JOUR TI - Implementation of the 5A's Smoking cessation tool in the electronic medical record: a quality improvement project DO - https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-fz43-ny67 PY - 2021 AB - Purpose of Project: Primary care providers have prime opportunity to provide smoking cessation counseling and care for all of their patient population. Unfortunately, smoking cessation care is lacking by primary care providers. Guidelines recommend the use of the evidence-based 5A’s approach to screen and treat patients at every patient encounter for smoking cessation. This project sought to place the 5A’s smoking cessation tool into the EMR at a primary care practice in Monroe, New Jersey and assess for any increases in smoking cessation screening and care. Methodology: Quality improvement project - pre-/post-intervention chart reviews. The intervention includes implementation by the clinicians to complete and document the 5A’s for smoking cessation care at every patient encounter in the EMR and measuring rates of providers counseling and prescriptions prior to and after the intervention. Results: Pre-intervention 14.7% were provided counseling and 5.9% prescriptions; post-interventions 33.3% were provided counseling and 20.0% prescriptions. These findings were not statistically significant (p=0.082 and P=0.103, respectively). Implications for Practice: 5A’s approach can be easily intergraded into EMRs and used at primary care practice at no cost to provider or patient. It will help provided evidence-based smoking cessation care to all patients. KW - Smoking KW - Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner LA - English ER -
