DescriptionPurpose of Project: The purpose of this project is to examine if education of the CAM-ICU assessment tool will increase the knowledge and ability of the bedside critical care nurse in using the tool to identify delirium.
Methodology: This project was a quasi-experimental, pre-test/post-test design focused on re-education of the CAM-ICU assessment tool to identify delirium. It included a one-hour long educational session, introduction of a CAM-ICU checklist, pre- and post-test evaluating knowledge of delirium, and pre- and post-objective assessment assessing ability to perform the CAM-ICU.
Results: Both the pre- and post-test and the pre- and post-objective assessment were evaluated for significance. Both were found to be significantly improved after the educational session, with p < 0.01.
Implications for Practice: A multi-modal educational approach to teaching the CAM-ICU delirium assessment tool to critical care nurses can increase their ability to identify delirium early in the patient stay. By identifying delirium early, interventions can be implemented earlier and decrease poor patient outcomes. This will decrease morbidity, mortality, and overall cost of the patient inpatient stay and post-discharge care.
