DescriptionCommunication within families has been studied in regards to health information, however gaps remain in our knowledge about family communication of genetic information. Mixed qualitative and quantitative interviews were done on probands with large familial cascade uptake, who were identified to have a pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant in medically actionable conditions. Probands were asked questions regarding mode(s) of communication used to share their results, why that specific mode(s), and the success of each mode used. The primary reason expressed for sharing the information was to inform family members about their risk. Results also indicated a variety of modes were used based on the proband’s preference and perception of best mode for the family member. Overall, family members whose communication of information regarding the proband’s results included verbal modes were the ones to pursue cascade testing.
