DescriptionPurpose of Project: This DNP project examined whether a practice-driven campaign using non-invasive screening methods for colon cancer improved HEDIS outcomes in three primary care practices in New Jersey.
Methodology: The 2019 colorectal cancer screening results were compared to 2020 colorectal cancer screening results for three primary care practices in New Jersey. The comparison was to determine if providing clinical teams with educational toolkits and an improved understanding of colorectal cancer screening methods would improve patient screening adherence, thereby increasing the usage of non-invasive screening methods.
Results: The results did not support the clinical question based on the Mann-Whitney test (z = -1.168, p = .254). The COVID-19 pandemic can be a possible reason as to why the results are what they are. Primary care practices throughout New Jersey were not seeing patients initially because of the shelter in place mandate, and outpatient elective procedures were canceled from March thru May.
Implications for Practice: This DNP project identified that by using evidence-based models and tools, practice teams could improve how they communicate the importance of CRC screening, thereby improving patient adherence.
