DescriptionPurpose of Project: The purpose of the study is to determine if using a smartphone application can help individuals lose more weight when added to a weigh loss management program.
Methodology: Participants in a weight loss clinic in northern New Jersey between the ages of 18-65 were randomly selected and placed in either the experimental group or control group. The weight loss of the experimental group and control group as measured in pounds over a two-month period was tested using the Chi-square formula.
Results: The result revealed a Chi-square score of 314.43, with a P-value of 1.09 indicating that there is a relationship between the variables but suggests that the study is not statistically significant. Any additional weight loss achieved by individuals can provide a positive impact both in one's health as well as one's healthcare-related expenditures.
Implications for Practice: Technology has integrated into the lives of many individuals in the United States, with a large majority of the population having their cellphone or tablet with them at all times. Individuals can utilize the smartphone application to record and keep their weight loss data, which can also be used as a tool for healthcare providers to review their day-to-day trends in diet, exercise and weight loss.
