TitleA qualitative follow up study of experiences of a sample of recent alumni of the school psychology program of Rutgers: The State University of New Jersey
DescriptionThis study examined the career experiences of a sample of alumni from the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology (GSAPP) School Psychology Program (PsyD) at Rutgers University currently employed as early career school psychologists in school settings. Data from 14 semi-structured interviews was analyzed using classical content analysis. Findings indicate that GSAPP School Psychology graduates are satisfied with their training and their current employment. Participants reported that they found their practica experiences and coursework in assessment to be among the most helpful aspects of their training. Participants reported that coursework in research was least helpful, and reported that they would have liked additional training in assessment and intervention. Findings emphasize the importance of practicum experiences in preparing students to work as school psychologists, and indicate that additional training in assessment and intervention may also enhance students’ training and preparation for employment.
