DescriptionPurpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement the use of a mindfulness practice app into nurse practitioners’ everyday routine to assess if nurse practitioner burnout decreases or is prevented by using the Mindfulness app compared to nurse practitioners who do not use the Mindfulness app.
Methodology: The daily goal of mindfulness practice for this project was 4 to 6 minutes per day every day during the 5-day introductory program Get Started. The main clinical question of this project was: Can a mindfulness app decrease or prevent nurse practitioner burnout? The primary goal of this quality improvement project was to introduce a mindfulness app to nurse practitioners to determine if there was a reduction in their burnout after using the app. The project was flexible and available (online and offline) to accommodate nurse practitioners’ busy schedules and stressful work environments.
Results: The project goals evaluation was performed with a pre and post assessment tool, the OLBI questionnaire. A two-tailed paired t test was performed and determined that the results were statistically significant. The pre_score was statistically significant than the post_score (t(35) = 3.32, p = .002).
Implications for Practice: Clinical Practice: Mindfulness practice introduction to nurse practitioners assisting them to develop and establish new healthy habits. Economic: Mindfulness app is free and leads to reduction and prevention of burnout. Healthcare quality and safety: Mindfulness app reduces nurse practitioners’ burnout and therefore further research is needed to establish a correlation on burnout, quality of care provided and client safety. Policy implication and practice change: Mindfulness app can be easily integrated into the nurse practitioner’s daily routine as well as be part of the new organizational strategies to mitigate burnout.
