Scarborough, Carly. The impact of COVID-19 on clinical rotations across genetic counseling training programs. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-k7eg-kn49
DescriptionThe COVID-19 pandemic had an immediate transformative impact on the healthcare system and in turn shifted the way in which genetic counseling clinical rotations were completed. A survey was developed to understand the perceptions of genetic counseling students who completed their training prior to and during the pandemic. The aims of this study were to provide insight on what positives came from remote rotations, identify short-comings that can be better addressed to optimize training, and provide program leadership with sustainable changes for remote training. Participants as a whole reported an overall positive experience with remote training, and felt this exposure taught them skills they never would have learned if training had continued to be in-person. Challenges were reported with opportunities to observe procedures, to be involved with administrative tasks, and to attend additional learning opportunities. This study illustrates the benefits of remote training and suggests that it should continue to remain a part of the graduate school experience so that it reflects the current work practices of the profession.
