DescriptionPurpose of Project: Poor medication adherence is a multi-factorial problem among heart failure (HF) patients due to comorbidities including polypharmacy management (Shah et al., 2015). The purpose of this project is to determine if the use of an educational video, a self-management tool, in conjunction with a pillbox will improve patient adherence to medication and disease management. The intervention is designed to increase their knowledge about HF management, including lifestyle and medication adherence, as well as early symptom recognition while collaborating with a primary healthcare provider.
Methodology: A quasi-experimental study with a pre/post survey, a 7-minute educational heart failure video, a self-medication form, and the use of a pillbox over thirty days. Evaluation of adherence was measured by the pre/post surveys. Descriptive and inferential tests using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 were used to perform a McNemar and Chi-Square test.
Results: There was a statistical significance showing improved medication adherence with the use of the pillbox among the heart failure population.
Implications for Practice: This model can be used for heart failure patients when used in conjunction with a primary health care provider, an educational video, a self-medication form, and a pillbox.
