DescriptionPurpose of Project:The COVID-19 pandemic has led healthcare workers (HCWs) to face tremendous amounts of stress. Stress negatively impacts HCWs and healthcare organizations. A review of the literature concluded mobile mindful meditation applications reduce stress levels. However, there is a gap in the literature that supports mobile mindful meditation applications for HCWs during a pandemic. This research project utilized a mobile mindful meditation application to decrease HCWs’ perceived stress levels at a large organization during a pandemic.
Methodology
Through quasi-experimental design, researchers assessed the effect of utilizing a mobile mindful meditation application on HCWs’ stress levels. Participants' perceived stress levels were measured with Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), pre-and post-intervention. Participants listened to a mobile mindful meditation application for 20-30 minutes per day for 30 days.
Results
106 participants completed the pretest; 100 participants completed the posttest. Six were lost to follow up. Descriptive statistics revealed that all participants' mean pretest perceived stress scores were reduced from moderate to low-stress post-intervention. Medical Assistants, Technologists, and the youngest participants reported the highest preintervention perceived stress scores. Providers and the oldest participants reported the lowest preintervention perceived stress scores. Post-intervention, female HCWs’ perceived stress was reduced more than males. There was a statistically significant difference in stress reduction between the pre-intervention and post-intervention groups across various categories, p< 0.050 according to Independent Sample Mann Whitney U Tests.
Implications for Practice
Mobile mindful meditation applications should be utilized by HCWs to reduce stress. The reduction of stress in HCWs has the potential to improve the quality-of-care HCWs provide, support policy encouraging organizations to distribute mental health resources to HCWs, and may reduce spending for the healthcare organization. Mobile mindful meditation applications positively impact HCWs and organizations.
