DescriptionPurpose of Project: The transgender community experiences heightened levels of discrimination; this is especially true in the healthcare setting. Healthcare providers are often uneducated and ill-prepared to care for this population. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, skill, and comfort of anesthesia providers in the perioperative care of the transgender individual.

Methodology: Through the use of a quasi-experimental design, a gap analysis survey was accessed online by participants through a Qualtrics hyperlink. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) (n=37) and Physician Anesthesiologists (n=0) were eligible to participate in the study. Gap analysis survey results shaped content for the educational in-service.

Results: Survey results demonstrated educational deficits in the gender-affirmative perioperative care of transgender individuals. A Spearman’s Rho determined associations between question responses. Participants' responses for the question with the lowest mode had a correlation with three other questions (p<0.005). Responses highlighted the need for increased awareness of current resources, along with the utilization of proper terminology, the familiarity of perioperative considerations, and the adequate training to provide care distinct to transgender individuals.

Implications for Practice: Through the education of anesthesia professionals, the expectation is that they will incorporate the specific health care needs of this population into everyday clinical practice. This aids in the promotion of an inclusive and safe environment for transgender individuals. This culture shift has the potential to reduce the health disparities that exist for the transgender community and facilitate sustainable change.
