Ventura, Songyi Rebecca. Reducing hyperphosphatemia in patients on hemodialysis: a quality improvement project. Retrieved from https://doi.org/doi:10.7282/t3-pnp2-zp02
DescriptionPurpose of the Project: The purpose of the project was to test the impact of a phosphorus educational toolkit on patients with hyperphosphatemia on dialysis to reduce their phosphorus levels.
Methodology: The toolkit consisted of educational material on ways to reduce phosphorous intake, and food logs used for patients to keep track of their daily dietary habits. A 5-week quality improvement study was done at a hemodialysis clinic with 45 patients as part of standard care where patients received additional education about phosphorus.
Results: Although no statistically significant reduction in phosphate levels was seen after a 5-week period, 53% of the participating patients had a decrease in phosphate levels and quiz scores had improved –indicating an increase in patient knowledge on phosphorus after the implementation of the toolkit.
Implications for Practice: Additional patient education will help increase patient knowledge and should be applied and reinforced in more dialysis facilities.
