DescriptionPurpose of Project: Increase contraceptive counseling services and contraceptive methods prescribed at a health center located in Newark, NJ, by developing and implementing a contraceptive counseling protocol.
Methodology: A quality improvement project that consisted of a retrospective and prospective chart review. The participants completed an educational module prior to the implementation of the protocol. The outcomes measured were all the diagnosis codes related to contraception management and all contraceptive methods prescribed during eligible visits through the electronic medical record. The study included all visits of women of reproductive ages 15 to 44 who met the criteria.
Results: Once all descriptive analyses were completed, a cross-comparison was made between the retrospective chart review and the prospective chart review using Chi-Square tests. Although there was an increase seen in almost all four comparisons, especially in contraceptive methods documentation found on file, the cross-comparison did not yield statistical significance. Although, there was clinical significance.
Implications for Practice: This project developed because there was a need for a change in practice. This project increased providers’ adherence to recommended guidelines on contraceptive counseling and management, which, in turn, enhanced the safety of care provided to the women in the community. Therefore, implementing this protocol assisted healthcare providers in developing individualized plans of care in counseling for women.
