DescriptionPurpose of the study: The purpose of this project was to increase the use of Dexmedetomidine for its opioid sparing properties.
Methodology: This project used a prospective, descriptive, design. First a Gap Analysis Survey was used to assess a need for more provider education. Next, a point of care Dexmedetomidine Workshop was implemented and dosage badge buddy made available to help increase the use of Dexmedetomidine in practice.
Results: A total of 100 participants responded to the Gap Analysis survey. Eighty-six percent of participants either “agree” or “strongly agree” that a Dexmedetomidine workshop and badge buddy would be helpful in increasing their knowledge and comfortability with the drug. Eight weeks following the point of care Dexmedetomidine workshop, there were 31 downloads of the dosage badge buddy and 18 downloads of the PowerPoint Presentation for a total of 49 downloads from the professional state organization of nurse anesthetists’ website.
Implications in Practice: The Dexmedetomidine dosage badge buddy is an educational tool for not only anesthesia clinical providers but can be used for resident registered nurse anesthetists in their studies and clinical practicums as well. Further, the basis of the badge buddy, providing dosages, route, timing, and common side effects can also be used by various medical professionals and nursing students in their education and training.
