DescriptionPurpose of Project: The Global Initiative for Asthma is an evidence-based resource that aids in the assessment of children with asthma. Children from six to eleven years old at a local pediatric practice have been diagnosed with asthma, but guidelines are not utilized to assess their symptoms. The GINA endorsed assessment portion of the guidelines was implemented and used to assess these patients to aid in the prevention of asthma exacerbations.
Methodology: This is a quality improvement project informed by the Knowledge-to-Action framework. The outcomes measured included lung function using a spirometer, inhaler technique, discussing symptom control by implementing the C-ACT questionnaire, and parental smoking status.
Results: Ten children participated in the project. The Wilcoxon test was utilized to determine whether there was statistical significance. There was a 20% overall improvement in the participants FEV1 level. The p value was .092 (z score was -1.683). The results were not statistically significant. There was a 359% improvement in the participants ability to demonstrate correct inhaler technique, and a 57% improvement in symptom control. Their p values were .005 and .008 respectively. The results were statistically significant for both outcomes. Only one parent reported smoking.
Implications for Practice: The key findings of this project support the use of the GINA guidelines to prevent asthma exacerbations in a small population. The assessment portion of the guidelines will continue to be implemented and plans to utilize other portions will be considered.
