DescriptionThe surficial clay deposits of the Raritan formation are varied and serve many purposes in craft and industry. While these resources have fostered economic development and a rich maker tradition in the region, their extraction has left scars on the landscape and its denizens. Resonant Earth is a sound–based homage to the lost maker tradition in the Raritan Formation and its past leaders in the field of ceramic fabrication. Studying materials through hands-on exploration, 3D and physical acoustic modeling, and drawing on digital fabrication technology, a ceramic sound sculpture is then fabricated from locally sourced clays. By playing the sculpture, reviewers listen to a void in the earth and memorialize the geological and craft histories of the Raritan formation.
