Purpose: The purpose of this study was to generate interest in a new nurse residency program (NRP) in an out-of-hospital (OOH) setting. NRP allows nurses to refine their skills and become familiarized with the organization’s specific policies, procedures, and workflows within their specific department, which lead to satisfaction. When Nurse Residency Programs are in place, there is a decreased intent to leave the profession.
Methodology: Using a Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance approach, emails were sent to the six facilities, including the “Organization Interest Survey”. A two-week follow email was sent after the initial email. Results: Over a two-week period one survey was returned. The returned survey was from a long-term facility (n=1, 16.69% return rate). This project had low return survey results, but the return survey did show high interest. The survey was made accessible through Qualtrics, with eight multiple-choice questions and two open-ended questions.
Implications for Practice: Awareness and participation in (NRP) in the OOH setting will benefit the new nurses and substantially impact clinical practice by increasing competence and confidence early in the nurse’s career. A confident nurse will be highly engaged, empowered, and trust their clinical judgment. Based on interest, the model development will be explored to develop a virtual program for new nurse residents. These specific residency programs have the potential to impact facility attrition and support new nurses in their career journey.
